"This is mostly the result of me getting real upset listening to podcasts about climate change and real happy when I listen to RMT union leader Mick Lynch. So this one is a lil ode to our past — and Mick Lynch’s hero (and one of mine as well) the revolutionary socialist, easter rising martyr and bloody incredible writer James Connolly. It’s also about my certainty that the climate crisis will not be resolved by the ruling class that got us into this shit show in the first place. The way forward for the climate movement is to stand on the shoulders of the giants that went before us and embrace the working class environmentalism and the socialist politics that can put solidarity into action. We’ve seen that kind of politics here before when the mighty BLF showed" the world that working class people, democratically organised, have the power not only to fight for their own dignity, but also to defend our environment, and to stand in solidarity with the oppressed in their own fight for liberation. We need a climate movement that knows exactly who is to blame for the climate crisis, and that knows exactly where our own power lies. We need a movement that is organised and class conscious enough to take that union power and use it to champion land rights, workers’ rights, and to build a world that is like not on fucking fire or drowning in floods (or somehow both at the same time) as a bare minimum."
“Some men, faint-hearted, ever seek
Our programme to retouch,
And will insist, whene’er they speak
That we demand too much.
’Tis passing strange, yet I declare
Such statements give me mirth,
For our demands most moderate are,
We only want the earth.”
— James Connolly, 1907
